Mama Joy Chauke, renowned as South Africa’s foremost sports enthusiast, responds to Gayton McKenzie’s decision to cease payments for superfans.
Recently, the Minister of Sports, Culture, and Arts announced via Twitter that trips for superfans, including Mama Joy, would no longer be funded.
“I have discontinued funding for trips for superfans. We have athletes and artists struggling to finance their attendance at sporting events and exhibitions. How can we justify funding fans? We will redirect these funds to where they are most needed,” McKenzie stated.
According to SowetanLIVE, Mama Joy remains unfazed by Minister Gayton’s decision, noting that he did not mention her specifically.
“I have no comment on what he said. He didn’t mention my name, so others can respond if they wish, but I won’t. I’m not afraid to speak out, but in this instance, I choose not to.”
“He said what he said, but he didn’t name me. If my name had been mentioned, then I would respond. Perhaps they are still funding those superfans; I don’t know. Anything is possible,” Mama Joy remarked.
