CAPE TOWN – The Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) has publicly declared its opposition to the Government of National Unity (GNU), with general secretary Solly Phetoe calling the Democratic Alliance (DA) an “enemy of the working class” during a Workers’ Day rally on Thursday.

Addressing a large crowd of tripartite alliance supporters in Cape Town, Phetoe delivered a strong message condemning the DA’s role within the GNU and criticized the party’s governance in the Western Cape, accusing it of misleading the public regarding job creation.

“The Central Executive Committee of COSATU must take a decision to launch a two-day national shutdown. This Government of National Unity is not recognised by COSATU,” Phetoe said.

He further claimed that some of the GNU’s participants had chosen to work against the interests of South Africa’s workers, citing past actions by the DA. “The DA marched to COSATU House last year, declaring COSATU as enemy number one. Comrades, go to the farms and witness how farmworkers are treated under DA rule,” he told the crowd.

Phetoe ended his address with a rallying call for the working class to unite in the fight for decent employment and fair labour conditions.
