
Attempted Rape Suspect Apprehended by Community in Redcliffe, KwaZulu-Natal
Redcliffe, KwaZulu-Natal – A 39-year-old Mozambican national suspected of attempting to rape a South African woman was apprehended by community members in Redcliffe before he could fully carry out the alleged attack.
According to reports, the suspect arrived at a local tuck shop operated by the victim and waited for other customers to leave. Once alone with the woman, he allegedly assaulted her and attempted to drag her into a back room. The victim’s screams alerted nearby residents, who responded swiftly to the commotion.
The suspect fled the scene on foot but was pursued by members of the informal settlement. The number of community members involved in the chase grew as the pursuit continued. The suspect was eventually caught on Valley View Drive, where he was severely beaten by the crowd.
Local law enforcement officials from the Verulam South African Police Service (SAPS) arrived at the scene and took the suspect into custody. He is currently under investigation, and further details will be released as the case progresses.
Authorities have commended the community for their vigilance but have also urged residents to refrain from taking the law into their own hands.
