Mamelodi Sundowns Secure Historic Victory at FIFA Club World Cup
Orlando, Florida – June 18, 2025 – Mamelodi Sundowns began their FIFA Club World Cup campaign with a landmark 1–0 victory over South Korean champions Ulsan HD, marking a significant milestone for African football on the global stage.
The match, held at the Inter&Co Stadium in Orlando, was delayed by over an hour due to severe thunderstorms and lightning in the area. Despite the weather interruption, the South African champions maintained their focus and composure to deliver a disciplined and tactically mature performance.
The decisive moment came in the 36th minute when forward Iqraam Rayners capitalized on a precise through ball from Lucas Ribeiro, calmly finishing past the Ulsan goalkeeper to give the DStv Premiership side a deserved lead.
Head coach Rulani Mokwena praised his team’s performance under pressure:
“It was a proud night for South African and African football. The boys showed character, resilience, and maturity. We executed our plan well and earned a result that reflects the hard work done back home.”
Sundowns’ midfield pairing of Teboho Mokoena and Marcelo Allende controlled the tempo of the game, while goalkeeper Ronwen Williams led a disciplined defensive line that neutralized Ulsan’s late attempts to equalize.
With Borussia Dortmund and Fluminense playing to a goalless draw earlier in the day, Sundowns now top Group F with three points, placing them in a strong position heading into their next fixtures against the German and Brazilian heavyweights.
The victory not only boosts Sundowns’ chances of progressing to the knockout stage but also cements their growing reputation as one of Africa’s most formidable clubs on the international scene.
