A 43-year-old man has been arrested after he was found in possession of compressed dagga with an estimated street value of R1.3 million on Tuesday, 17 June 2025.

The arrest came as a result of a coordinated effort involving several law enforcement units including the Mopani Tracking Team, SAPS Maake Task Team, Private K9 Anti-Hijacking Unit, Haenertsburg Neighbourhood Watch, Hoshani Security, Letaba Security, and E2 Cross Province.

According to a statement released by the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Limpopo, officers had received a tip-off regarding a white VW Jetta suspected of transporting dagga from Swaziland en route to Zimbabwe.

“An operation was swiftly activated for the lookout of the described vehicle,” the police confirmed.

The vehicle was later located along the R529 near Mafarana Village, and was pulled over for inspection. Upon searching it, police discovered ten compressed bales of dagga, weighing 217.2 kilograms.

The 43-year-old suspect was immediately arrested on charges of illegal dealing in drugs, and the dagga was confiscated.

He is expected to appear before the Ritavi Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, 19 June 2025, where he will face a charge of dealing in drugs. Police investigations are ongoing.

The bust is yet another indication of the growing trend of drug smuggling across provincial and international borders, with Limpopo increasingly becoming a transit route for traffickers.

Authorities have urged the public to continue reporting suspicious activity, as intelligence-driven operations remain key to dismantling organised criminal networks.
