Longwe Twala Remains in Custody

Longwe Twala, the son of renowned music executive Chicco Twala, appeared in court today with an unshaven face and wearing a grey hoodie. It appears he has been without drugs for at least a week since his incarceration. Longwe faced charges of theft after his father accused him of stealing household items and studio equipment valued at over R200,000.

During today’s proceedings at the Randburg Magistrate’s Court, Chicco Twala was notably absent, a contrast to his earlier court appearance. Chicco explained to the media last week that he initiated the case to confront his son’s ongoing drug issues and to address the theft that occurred while he was abroad. “He had been clean, so I allowed him to return home. I invested in studio equipment for both my sons, who are sound engineers. However, he stole equipment worth over R200,000 from my studio,” Chicco stated.

Longwe, along with his brother Sello (34), was arrested last week. Sello was released due to insufficient evidence linking him to the theft. Today’s court session was delayed due to the absence of Longwe’s legal aid lawyer and pending bail application.

Chicco admitted that his son’s long-standing drug addiction, which began at age 17, has led to numerous failed attempts at rehabilitation. “I have sent him to over 30 rehab centers. Despite our family’s efforts, we have not succeeded in helping him,” Chicco said.

Longwe Twala is scheduled to return to court next Monday.
