Avocado Rootstock Breeder
Reporting to the Research Manager, the Incumbent will be responsible to manage the avocado rootstock programme (from selection to commercialization).
The rootstock programme strives to identify and test new avocado rootstocks for the ever-changing environment in the diverse conditions in avocado orchards across the world.
The ability to design and analyze trials is an integral part of the job.
The incumbent must be willing to travel nationally and internationally to monitor research trials, network with researchers on a global scale and offer technical support to the farm’s colleagues located across the globe.
Qualifications/Experience:
• M.Sc. Agric (Horticulture/Genetics) or Ph.D. (Horticulture/Breeding) or related agricultural qualification
• Minimum 5 years’ experience in agriculture production / research / breeding
• Experience in plant breeding (traditional and/or molecular), with a keen focus on fruit production
• Driver’s license
Knowledge:
• Breeding and Horticulture principles
• Knowledge of traditional breeding protocols
• Understanding of molecular approaches with regards to plant material improvement
• Good Agricultural Practices (GAP)
• Computer literacy: MS Office (Word, Excel & Power Point)
• Financial and Human relations principles
• Health and Safety principles
